Built in 1865 the 70ft monument situated in the forecourt of Charing Cross Station had been neglected for many years leading to loss of decorative stonework and fine detailing.

Paye undertook conservation repair of the masonry carefully replacing carved features to replicate the original architectural design.

To minimise the environmental impact the carving was carried out on site to reduce transportation of materials to and from to this central London site. This approach also ensured a high-quality finish as the masons were able to work adjacent to the feature that needed to be re-carved.

The monument is one of the finest and richly detailed examples of hand carved masonry in the country requiring a high level of skill to be able to replicate the original intricate detailing. Masons’ bankers were constructed on each lift to ensure the high level of detail was maintained.
