Paye were successfully appointed after an international design competition to create a memorial dedicated to those who served in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Working in close collaboration with renowned sculptor Paul Day we were appointed as Principal Designer and Principal Contractor for the design, manufacture and installation of the memorial.
The memorial is formed of two Portland limestone monoliths towering over 5.5m high with a combined weight of 35 tonne with a 1.8m diameter bronze medallion set floating within the centre.
Paye’s experience of heavy masonry structures was crucial as masonry units weighing more than 5 tonne had to be squeezed through a confined access path within a short window of operations and installed with fine joints. Using 3D modelling software, we are were able to accurately carve the intersecting curves of the limestone using the largest CNC machine available in the UK.
The memorial was unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth II and 2,500 specially invited guests as part of a fully televised Drumhead Ceremony in March 2017.
