The redundant West Smithfield market buildings are being redeveloped for the relocation of The Museum of London which will incorporate the internal historic trading floors and subterranean tunnels and meat storage rooms.

In order to provide safe access for the architects and structural engineers Paye were initially employed by City of London Corporation to carry out temporary propping and opening up works.  These were required due to the dangerous condition of structures supporting internal walls and roof beams which had deteriorated over the previous 27 years since the buildings were last fully occupied.

Following completion of the enabling contract Paye secured the external repair and refurbishment Principal Contract awarded by Museum of London.

This extensive and complex contract involves cleaning and repair of masonry, complete re-roofing of the Central Market, structural timber replacement, new steel beams, rooflights, timber windows repaired with new double glazed panels.

Paye have also been undertaking cleaning and repairs of stone and brick facades to the adjacent Annex Building.
