Tilbury Fort is England’s best example of a 17th-century bastioned fortress, with its complete circuit of moats and ‘outworks’ still substantially surviving. The fort as we largely see it today was commissioned by King Charles II following a humiliating Dutch raid in 1667.

English Heritage instructed Paye as Principal Contractors to undertake repairs to the chimneys, including installing pre-cast capping stones to prevent water ingress, and halt the resulting damp inside the buildings, some of which are still to this day, residential.

Works were conducted to the 12 chimney stacks and 40 flues which terminate inside each one of the properties. Once each chimney and flue was swept, we created air vents within the building and an air path under the chimney. The capping stones which sit on new brickwork are designed to help create a flow of air to maintain and help drive out any moisture within the fabric of the building. Additional work and decorations were also undertaken to the windows including the installation of a new fire escape window.

Working to preserve our heritage is what we do. We have been fortunate to work across many English Heritage sites, including in recent years at Dover Castle, Pevensey Castle, Reculver Towers and Roman Fort and Orford Castle to name just a few. It was great to return to Tilbury Fort in Essex to undertake works to the old officer barracks, Paye’s George Morris explains what we were up to!
