Ecclesiastical Lath and Plaster

St Marys Restoration

Restoration at the beautiful St Mary’s Church in Balcombe, Mid-Sussex.

Amongst other restoration and repair work to some damaged masonry and to the roof, we have repaired some classic lath and plaster inside the church.

It was apparent that there was a serious lack of mortar between the laths and with the weight of the lime and also the conditions of the lathes, it was necessary to remove it in full. On further investigation we discovered that there had been previously some very crude insulation between the roof and the lathes which allowed for no air gap so as a result they had decayed.

Our expert team stripped everything back, and we replaced the chestnut lathes and re-plastered with a lime mix including horse hair and built up in 3 layers, the result is beautiful…
