The Memorial to the RAF on the Embankment is considered to be the official memorial of the RAF and related services.
The memorial comprises a tapering Portland stone pylon topped by zodiacal globe bearing a gilded eagle, taken from the RAF’s badge, with raised wings, facing east towards the River Thames and nominally towards France.
The memorial required a specialist conservation clean to the Portland stone and granite, and all masonry joints repointed with lime mortar. Following a detailed inspection of the eagle and bronze globe by a metal conservator, minor repairs and re-gilding were identified and completed.
